In an era where building affordable housing and fostering community development is more crucial than ever, Community Builders emerges as a leading example of purpose-driven construction. The organization, rooted in the rich landscapes of Northern and Central Ontario, has recently unveiled its Impact Report for 2024-2025, showcasing an inspiring year of achievements and a commitment to empowering individuals through construction. This article dives into the heart of Community Builders’ mission and its multifaceted efforts to create not only structures but opportunities for those in need.
A Challenging Economic Landscape
The past year has presented significant hurdles in the Canadian economy, particularly in the construction sector, which faced tariff-induced pressures and slowed growth. However, as Brandon Day, co-founder and CEO of Community Builders, points out, these challenges have intensified the demand for affordable housing and skills training. In response, Community Builders has remained steadfast in delivering positive economic and social impacts, illustrating how challenges can catalyze innovation and resilience.
Key Achievements in the Impact Report
The 2024-2025 Impact Report outlines several significant highlights that underscore the organization’s success in various areas:
-
Diverse Building Projects: Community Builders completed 324 building projects, with contributions spanning social housing (50%), renovations (21.9%), affordable housing (14.5%), and co-operative housing (7.1%). This diversity not only addresses the immediate needs of the community but also ensures holistic development.
-
Skilled Trades Training Program: For nine consecutive years, Community Builders has implemented a 12-week paid Skilled Trades Training Program designed for individuals facing barriers to employment. This year alone, 85 trainees participated, with a remarkable 89% securing stable employment within six months. This statistic emphasizes the program’s effectiveness in transforming lives.
- Support from Key Partnerships: The organization continues to be bolstered by significant partnerships, supported by funding from the Government of Canada’s Canadian Apprenticeship Strategy (CAS), the Ontario Skills Development Fund, and other foundations. Such alliances are pivotal for sustaining and expanding Community Builders’ training initiatives.
Embracing Diversity in Training
One of the standout features of the Skilled Trades Training Program is its commitment to inclusivity. Over the past year, the program has served a diverse cohort, including:
- Women (31%)
- Youth (54%)
- Racialized Individuals (38%)
- Indigenous People (13%)
- Individuals with Disabilities (28%)
This focus on diversity not only enriches the learning experience but also contributes to a more equitable workforce. The program has proven particularly effective for individuals transitioning from corrections or those with low levels of education and job experience, helping them secure stable, meaningful employment in the trades.
Adapting to Labor Market Realities
Community Builders’ adaptability is exemplified by a significant shift in its trainee demographics. Previously, youth aged 18-30 represented only 22% of the training cohort; this year, they comprise 54%. This shift aligns with evolving labor market demands and underscores the organization’s responsiveness to the needs of the community.
Graduates leave the program equipped with essential skills, safety certifications, tools, and personal protective equipment (PPE), ready to tackle the challenges of the trades sector.
Investment in Human Capital
Community Builders invests approximately $20,000 per trainee, funding their wages, expert trainers, and comprehensive wraparound supports. In the previous year, this led to the creation of $480,000 in paid training opportunities alongside $100,000 in additional supports, highlighting the organization’s commitment to not just construction, but comprehensive community development.
Strategic Growth and Expansion
With an ambitious strategic plan, Community Builders has successfully replicated its model in new regions, opening operations in Muskoka and Sault Ste. Marie. This expansion signifies the organization’s ongoing dedication to building stable communities by offering employment opportunities while fulfilling the pressing need for social housing.
A Community of Learning and Growth
Carly Gasparini, Executive Director, emphasizes the unique learning environment fostered by Community Builders. The program transcends traditional education, offering trainees a community that instills confidence and equips them to forge new paths in their lives. This community-centric approach not only enhances individual prospects but also strengthens the fabric of society.
