Celebrating Excellence in Construction: Highlights from the VRCA 2024 Awards Gala

Vancouver Shines in Construction Excellence

On the evening of October 24, 2024, the JW Marriott Parq in downtown Vancouver transformed into a glamorous venue for the Vancouver Regional Construction Association (VRCA) Awards of Excellence gala. As the construction industry donned its finest attire, the stage was set to celebrate outstanding achievements in British Columbia’s construction landscape.

This year’s event marked an impressive milestone—its 35th year—and welcomed a diverse array of talent and innovation from within the industry. The gala’s intention was clear: to honor those who have excelled in various categories of construction projects that speak volumes about skill, creativity, and tenacity.

Honoring Outstanding Achievements

The highlight of the evening was the announcement of the Gold Award winners, celebrated for setting a new standard for excellence in the construction sector. VRCA president Jeannine Martin emphasized the significance of these achievements. “This year’s Gold award winners and outstanding achievement recipients have set a new standard for excellence,” she stated, highlighting the contributions of the Members of the Year: ETRO Construction, Division 15 Mechanical, and Super Save Group. Their dedication to the VRCA’s mission and the broader construction community was met with overwhelming applause.

Moreover, special recognition was given to Dave Fettback, who received the title of Life Member for his unwavering commitment to advocating for quality and professionalism within the industry. This accolade underscored the importance of mentorship and leadership in shaping the future of construction.

Diverse Categories of Excellence

The evening shone a spotlight on an array of categories, recognizing not just industry giants but also the unsung heroes of the construction field. Achievements in Safety, Women in Construction, Young Construction Leaders, and Education Leadership were acknowledged, driving home the association’s commitment to inclusivity and progress within the industry.

A remarkable submission pool of 91 entries across 61 projects, boasting a staggering combined construction value of over $2.9 billion, spoke volumes about the competitive spirit and creativity amongst the professionals in attendance.

Spotlight on Award Winners

The awards ceremony celebrated a diverse range of accomplishments. For instance, in the Manufacturers and Suppliers category, Garibaldi Glass Industries, Inc. earned accolades for its work on the Vancouver Centre II, valued at $4 million. In the Electrical Contractors sections, notable wins included Fettback & Heesterman for SAAM Towage in the under $2 Million category and Western Pacific Enterprises Ltd. for the YVR26 – The Post South Tower, which surpassed the $10 million threshold.

Mechanical Contractors also garnered attention, with Division 15 Mechanical Ltd. awarded for its $5.368 million project at 411 Railway Street and Gisborne Industrial Construction Ltd. receiving accolades for the Vancouver Airport Fuel Delivery Project valued at over $13 million.

Trade Contractors shone brightly as well, with Nucor Rebar Fabrication making headlines for its significant $210 million contribution to the Site C Clean Energy Generating Station and Spillway project.

General Contractors Take Center Stage

The crème de la crème was saved for the General Contractors, where projects varied widely in scale and ambition. Edge Vancouver Construction Group Ltd. took home the trophy for projects up to $20 million with their work on “The Peak.” In stark contrast, PCL Constructors Westcoast Inc. triumphed with a massive $540 million undertaking focused on the Vancouver Post Office Redevelopment.

Even civil and industrial construction categories did not go unnoticed, with Smith Bros. & Wilson (B.C.) Ltd. applauded for its Dicklands Biogas Plant, valued at nearly $18 million, and Kiewit Infrastructure BC ULC honored for its BC Highway Reinstatement Program project, a staggering $247 million endeavor.

Conclusion: A Future Built on Excellence

The VRCA 2024 Awards of Excellence gala encapsulated the vibrancy of the British Columbia construction industry, with its commitment to quality, innovation, and safety. As industry leaders and emerging talents came together to celebrate each other’s accomplishments, one thing became clear: the future of construction in B.C. remains bright.
