Hanwha Ocean and Ontario Systems Propel Naval Shipbuilding Forward

Revitalizing Shipbuilding in Ontario: A Strategic Partnership

In a significant move aimed at revitalizing the shipbuilding industry in Ontario, Hanwha Ocean and Ontario Shipyards have signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This agreement is designed to accelerate large-scale shipbuilding in the province and bolster Canada’s capacity to deliver future naval programs. The partnership not only addresses the current needs of the shipbuilding sector but also aims to establish Ontario as a leading center for advanced marine manufacturing in the Great Lakes region.

Accelerating Shipbuilding Capabilities

Under the terms of the MOU, Hanwha Ocean will provide essential technical and operational support to Ontario Shipyards. This collaboration focuses on several key areas essential for enhancing shipyard performance:

  • Design and Engineering: Streamlining processes to ensure efficient ship design and construction.
  • Production Planning: Improving construction sequencing to optimize workflow.
  • Quality Management: Implementing robust quality management systems to meet international standards.
  • Advanced Shipyard Processes: Adopting smart-yard best practices to modernize shipbuilding operations.

These initiatives aim to speed up the reestablishment of large-scale vessel construction capabilities in Ontario while enhancing overall production efficiency. As part of this collaboration, a Training and Recruitment vessel will be built by Ontario Shipyards in 2026, showcasing next-generation shipbuilding capabilities and serving as a hands-on training platform.

Strategic Workforce Development

In conjunction with the MOU, Hanwha Ocean, Ontario Shipyards, and Mohawk College have entered into a Letter of Intent (LOI) to set up an embedded shipbuilding training hub at Ontario Shipyards’ Hamilton facility. This initiative seeks to address ongoing shortages in skilled trades and technical professionals critical to the shipbuilding sector.

The collaborative training hub will focus on four main areas:

  • Training Hub Integration: Creating a physical space within Ontario Shipyards for educational programs.
  • Industry-Led Credentials: Developing specialized shipbuilding certifications to ensure alignment with industry standards.
  • Apprenticeships and Co-Ops: Establishing pathways for students to gain real-world experience while contributing to production needs.
  • Applied Research: Exploring innovations in automation, robotics, and digital manufacturing to streamline shipbuilding processes.

Mohawk College will spearhead academic programming across various skilled trades, including welding, electrical work, and marine mechanics. Ontario Shipyards will provide the necessary facilities and workforce integration, while Hanwha Ocean will offer technical advisory support and leverage its global industrial networks to align training with best practices.

Enhancing Defense Capabilities

The partnership represents a critical effort to strengthen Ontario’s role within Canada’s defense ecosystem. By combining industrial modernization with tailored workforce development, the initiative is in sync with Ontario’s advanced manufacturing strategy and the country’s overarching goal of enhancing sovereign defense industrial capabilities.

Through this coordinated approach, the partnership is expected to yield several benefits:

  • Job Creation: Generating sustainable, high-quality employment opportunities in the marine and defense sectors.
  • Supply Chain Expansion: Growing the network of Ontario-based marine and defense suppliers.
  • Support for Small Enterprises: Increasing participation from regional small and medium-sized enterprises in shipbuilding contracts.
  • Enhanced Domestic Capacity: Strengthening Canada’s ability to construct, maintain, and sustain complex naval platforms.

A Vision for the Future

In the long term, this initiative aims to position the Golden Horseshoe and the broader Great Lakes region as a nationally significant hub for advanced marine manufacturing and shipbuilding. The collaboration between Hanwha Ocean, Ontario Shipyards, and Mohawk College marks a crucial step in addressing both current and future workforce needs while revitalizing the shipbuilding industry in Ontario.

By enhancing the region’s capabilities and focusing on workforce training, Ontario is poised to become a vital player in the global shipbuilding market, further securing Canada’s position in maritime defense while fostering economic growth and innovation. This partnership signals a promising future, transforming challenges into opportunities for Ontario’s shipbuilding industry.
