B.C. Forestry Trade Mission to Asia Achieves Three Agreements with Japan and South Korea

British Columbia’s Forestry Trade Mission: Strengthening Ties in Asia

Delegates from British Columbia (B.C.) have recently returned from the province’s largest forestry trade mission to Asia, bringing back not just signed agreements, but also a strong reaffirmation of business partnerships in Japan and South Korea. This initiative, confirmed by the Government of British Columbia, aims to bolster market access and investments in the province’s forestry sector.

Enhancing International Relationships

The primary focus of the trade mission was to deepen existing relationships while fostering new collaborations in Japan and South Korea. By engaging with prominent stakeholders in these markets, B.C. aimed to promote the advantages of wood construction technologies, advocating for research collaboration and advancing policy development conducive to sustainability.

The delegation prioritized sharing expertise in various dimensions of wood-based design and construction, including essential safety codes and sustainable building practices. This emphasis is not just about promoting products but also about exchanging knowledge that supports the transition to environmentally responsible construction methodologies in these rapidly industrializing nations.

Significant Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs)

During the mission, two crucial memorandums of understanding were formalized, demonstrating a commitment to enhancing B.C. wood products’ visibility and accessibility in the Asian market.

The first MOU, signed between Canada Wood and the Japan 2×4 Home Builders Association, set the stage for increased cooperation on mid-rise and non-residential wood construction projects in Japan. This partnership not only positions B.C. companies favorably to supply lumber but also addresses the burgeoning demand in Japan’s hospitality and construction sectors, which have been seeking innovative and sustainable materials.

The second agreement involved Canada Wood, Forestry Innovation Investment, and the Korea Land and Housing Research Institute. This partnership is instrumental in supporting South Korea’s ambitious carbon-neutrality goals through the increased use of wood-based housing solutions. The collective effort focuses on promoting mass timber and wood materials as viable sustainable alternatives to conventional concrete, enhancing the environmental benefits of future construction projects.

Affordable Housing Initiatives on Vancouver Island

In a notable development, Centurion Lumber, Wing/Mobitech, Western Forest Products, and the First Nations Forestry Council signed an MOU aimed at addressing housing shortages on Vancouver Island. The partnership plans to deliver affordable modular housing, which encompasses emergency housing and support systems for First Nations and underserved communities. This initiative not only addresses immediate housing needs but also aims to increase urban density through innovative solutions like laneway homes.

Engaging Stakeholders

The scale of the mission was impressive, featuring over 60 delegates, including seven representatives from First Nations and First Nations-owned forestry businesses. The delegation engaged with more than 300 customers and partners through a series of 20 meetings, tours, and site visits across Japan and South Korea. This level of engagement underscores the commitment from B.C. to foster meaningful relationships that can lead to sustainable economic opportunities.

B.C.’s Broader Forestry Initiatives

This trade mission is part of a larger initiative by the province to strengthen forestry trade and investment with established international partners while also seeking new market opportunities. In a strategic move to enhance its reach, the province announced in October 2025 the opening of a new hub in London aimed at growing forestry exports to Europe and the United Kingdom, led by Forestry Innovation Investment.

Conclusion

The outcomes of this trade mission serve not only to reinforce British Columbia’s commitment to expanding its forestry market but also to contribute positively to global sustainability efforts. By fostering robust international partnerships and promoting innovative building methods, B.C. is positioning itself as a leader in the global forestry sector, ready to meet both local and international challenges in construction and sustainability. The echoes of this mission will resonate throughout the industry, supporting the growth and development of forestry in British Columbia and beyond.
